Alabama HIMSS Scholarship Program

The Alabama Chapter of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (Alabama HIMSS) is pleased to announce scholarships for students of healthcare informatics and technology and members of the HIMSS Alabama Chapter. Established and funded by the HIMSS Alabama Chapter, these scholarships are awarded to HIMSS members who exhibit excellence, actively engage in supporting the Alabama Chapter activities and demonstrate leadership potential in the healthcare information and management systems industry.  All Alabama members are encouraged to apply for the scholarship. Scholarship Opportunities

  • Student Merit Scholarships

AL HIMSS has allocated scholarship funds for a maximum of 3 awards per year in the amount of up to $1,400 each.  Students meeting the award eligibility and requirements below are encouraged to apply.

 

  • CPHIMS Certification Program Scholarship

AL HIMSS encourages ongoing professional development of its members.  As such, the HIMSS Alabama Chapter has allocated one (1) scholarship award in the amount of up to $500 for the CPHIMS training and certification exam.    

 

Scholarship Eligibility and Requirements

  • Student Merit Scholarships - Applicants for the Alabama Chapter Student Merit Scholarship must fulfill the minimum requirements below:
    • The applicant must join or be an established member in good standing with National HIMSS or Alabama HIMSS
    • Applicant must be able to demonstrate active participate in Alabama HIMSS committees, workgroups and conferences
    • At the time of application submission, the applicant must be a full-time or part-time student in an accredited Associates, Bachelors, Masters or PhD program related to the healthcare information management systems field.
    • The specific degree program is not a critical factor, although it is expected that programs similar to those in industrial engineering, operations research, healthcare informatics, computer science and information systems, mathematics, and quantitative programs in business administration and hospital administration will predominate
    • Previous Alabama HIMSS Scholarship winners are ineligible

 

  • CPHIMS Scholarship – Applicants for the Alabama Chapter CPHIMSS Scholarship must fulfill the minimum requirements below:
  • The applicant must join or be an established member in good standing with National HIMSS or Alabama HIMSS
  • Applicant must be able to demonstrate active participation in Alabama HIMSS committees, workgroups and conferences
  • Previous Alabama HIMSS Scholarship winners are ineligible

 

Selection and Award Criteria

The Alabama HIMSS Scholarship Program centers on making change and evolving the Alabama HIMSS mission of promoting professional development of its members and encouraging the advancement of healthcare management systems in the state of Alabama.  Alabama HIMSS will award up to 4 scholarships based on eligibility and active involvement or plans to engage with HIMSS Alabama Chapter.  Suggested activities include:

 

  1. Volunteer work on one or more Alabama HIMSS Committees including: 
    1. Advocacy:  bridging the gap between state officials and health IT in Alabama
    2. Communication:  increasing the volume of strategic content on the Alabama HIMSS website and exploring new ways to reach our membership
    3. Students:  building more exposure and involvement across our state’s colleges, universities, and technical schools
    4. Outreach:  identifying and engaging adjacent organizations with aligned missions to Alabama HIMSS
    5. Membership:  supporting recruiting, retention and value/benefits plans for members
    6. Program: fostering networking and education of members and non-members throughout Alabama
    7. Professional Development:  advancement and professional development of Alabama HIMSS members
  2. Supporting Alabama HIMSS events, educational programs and conferences conducted throughout the year.
  3. Heighten awareness of Alabama HIMSS and its mission including advice to organizations and individuals, assistance with preparation and distribution of materials, and involvement with members in chapter activities.

Submissions and Awards:

  • Applicants must complete the Alabama HIMSS Scholarship application form (available for download at end of page)
  • Applicants may begin submitting applications on November 1, 2016
  • The deadline for entry is February 15, 2017.
  • Winners will be announced and notified in late March.
